Exploring South Head: A Serene Peninsula in Auckland
South Head, also known as Te Korowai-o-Te-Tonga Peninsula, is a picturesque peninsula located in the Auckland Region of New Zealand. Stretching along the western edge of the Kaipara Harbour, South Head spans approximately 35 kilometres from near Helensville to the mouth of the harbour. Renowned for its stunning coastal landscapes and tranquil surroundings, South Head offers residents and visitors alike a retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.
History
Formerly known as the South Kaipara Peninsula, South Head was officially renamed Te Korowai-o-Te-Tonga Peninsula in 2013 as part of a Treaty of Waitangi settlement. The name, which means “The cloak of the south” in Māori, reflects the peninsula’s role in protecting the southern half of the Kaipara Harbour from the Tasman Sea and prevailing westerly winds. European settlers began purchasing land on the peninsula in the 1870s, with Alfred Buckland developing much of it as a cattle run in the 1880s.
Geography
The landscape of South Head is characterized by low-lying or gently undulating terrain, rising to a maximum elevation of 191 metres at its highest point. To the west, the peninsula is bordered by the Tasman Sea, featuring long beaches such as Te Oneone Rangatira Beach and Muriwai Beach. Inland, the area is covered by the expansive Woodhill Forest and dotted with several lakes, including the largest, Lake Rototoa. The northern tip of the peninsula is dominated by the Papakanui Spit and the Waionui Inlet.
Biodiversity
South Head is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including the rare korowai gecko, which is endemic to the west coast of the Auckland Region. The peninsula’s lakes and wetlands provide important habitats for numerous bird species, such as the New Zealand grebe and New Zealand scaup. The sandspit at the northern tip serves as a roosting site for migratory wading birds.
Demographics
As of the 2018 census, South Head had a population of 2,595 people, with a mix of European/Pākehā, Māori, Pacific peoples, Asian, and other ethnicities. The median age of residents was 42.2 years, and the majority of the population identified as having no religion. The area is predominantly rural, with many residents engaged in farming and other agricultural activities.
