Riverhead (Māori: Rangitōpuni) is a small yet historically significant town at the head of the Waitematā Harbour in Northwest Auckland. It lies northeast of Kumeū and Huapai. Rangitōpuni was a crucial portage route for Tāmaki Māori, connecting the Waitematā and Kaipara Harbours via Te Tōangaroa.
European settlement began in 1844 with the establishment of a kauri mill, later transforming into Auckland’s largest flour mill. The town thrived as a port and railway hub in the 19th century, playing a vital role in the kauri gum trade. Riverhead Forest, a sprawling Pinus radiata plantation, was planted in 1927 to the town’s north, adding to its natural charm. Today, Riverhead blends history and modern suburban life, offering a unique living experience.

Steeped in rich history, Riverhead is a small, historically working-class town located at the head of the Waitematā Harbour in northwest Auckland. Traditionally known as Rangitōpuni by local Māori tribes, the area was an important transportation link due to Te Tōangaroa – a portage where waka could be carried between the Kaipara and Waitematā Harbours.
European settlement began in 1844 with the establishment of a kauri mill, which later became the large Waitemata Flour Mill until 1876. A dray road in the 1850s and a railway line from 1875-1881 facilitated access to the Kaipara Harbour via Riverhead. The town became a hub for the kauri gum trade until the early 1900s and a tobacco growing area.
In 1927, the rural area north was turned into the exotic Riverhead Forest for timber production. As the forest matured, Riverhead became known for timber processing. Other notable developments included the Riverhead Tavern in the 1870s and St Philip’s Church in 1926.
