Kaukapakapa (Māori: “to swim with much splashing”) is a picturesque town in the Rodney ward of Auckland, located approximately 50 km northwest of the city. Positioned on SH16, Kaukapakapa connects to Helensville to the southwest and Araparera to the north. The town is also near Dairy Flat, Waitoki, and Warkworth, offering scenic access to the Kaipara Harbour via the Kaukapakapa River.
European settlement began in 1860, with early industries like kauri timber logging, gum digging, and flax processing shaping its economy. The Kaukapakapa River served as a vital transport link for floating kauri logs and shipbuilding. By the 1880s, the town’s population grew, with roads connecting to Riverhead and Helensville, though much travel still relied on river routes. Today, Kaukapakapa is known for its rich history, natural beauty, and strong ties to Auckland’s northwest communities.
